The Row is launching a menswear line. Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen’s fashion label, The Row, is officially launching its own menswear collection.
While the brand is known for its women’s clothing, the Olsen twins are branching out with a new collection for men, including denim, knitwear, tailored separates and suits.
The pair have quietly tested the men’s market for the past couple of years. Ashley said: “”We did one menswear capsule collection many years ago, and in 2016 launched a retail menswear capsule. It was imperative that we received our customers’ feedback and to approach this collection thoughtfully at our pace.”
As for why The Row is venturing into menswear after a successful 12 years designing for women, the pair want to do for men what they have done for women.
“It’s funny, because this is more of a risk than putting words on a T-shirt. Who knew that black, gorgeous, perfectly fitted suits would be a risk?”, Ashley told WSJ Magazine.
With nods to the 80s and 90s, and according to the official press release, The Row ‘s first men’s collection incorporates ‘the refinement of a classic bespoke experience with the precise minimal masculine style of New York,”.
The tailored pieces, which will hit stores in October, will be made in Japan, while the denim and T-shirts will be made in the US. With pieces going for $3,950 to $5,795, the prices mirror their women’s collection.
The twins have admitted that they have been surprised by the growth of their fashion empire.
Ashley told WSJ Magazine: “We never started the company with the intention of it being a fashion brand.”
Mary-Kate said: “It’s not like one day we wake up and say, we’re going to grow this business, and we’re going to have a menswear collection. That’s not the way we look at it.”
And the pair feel that being twins have helped them with their success.
Ashley explained: “It’s been 32 years of learning how to communicate. It’s a marriage and a partnership. We have had ups and downs. We do everything together.”
