Nicki Minaj suffers backlash over anti-bullying fashion campaign with Diesel. She is no stranger to controversy when it comes to her music, but Nicki Minaj is facing backlash for her new fashion campaign with Italian fashion brand Diesel.
The ‘Queen’ rapper was unveiled as one of the faces of Diesel’s ‘Hate Couture’ collection, a campaign that tackles online bullying.
Also featured in the campaign are actress Bella Thorne, rapper Gucci Mane, actor Tommy Dorfman, South Korean celebrity Yoo Ah-in and model Jonathan Bellini. Diesel debuted the campaign during Fashion Week, with each celeb co-designing a t-shirt for the collection.
The celebs take a hateful comment they have received online and put it on a Diesel garment.
Minaj, who was involved in an altercation with fellow rapper Cardi B during Fashion Week, designed a t-shirt and denim jacket with the words, ‘Bad Guy’ written in bold across the front of both pieces.
Customers were quick to call out Nicki’s involvement in the campaign, citing her history of beefs and questionable conduct on Instagram and Twitter. (Cardi B was reportedly provoked when Nicki allegedly made disparaging remarks about her newborn daughter – something Nicki has denied.)
Diesel, who mark their 40th birthday this year, have defended the casting of Nicki in the campaign, saying they support the rapper.
They tweeted: “We’re here to support anyone who’s getting hate on, and Nicki is one of them”
The Diesel ‘Hate Couture’ collection is available now in selected Diesel stores and online at Diesel.com. The limited-edition campaign is supported by a worldwide print campaign and a video, which in on Diesel’s Instagram.
A portion of the proceeds from the collection will go toward anti-bullying programs at Diesel’s Only the Brave (OTB) Foundation, a non-profit organization created by the company in 2008.
