Why Alek Wek is in control of her fashion look. South Sudanese-British model and designer, Alek Wek who is set to host the 2018 Fashion Awards this December has revealed that she wants to prove to others that she controls the style of clothing she wears.

The 41-year old fashion beauty who started modelling at the age of 18, back in 1995, says that she has never been an average model and wants to show that “clothes don’t wear her”.

Wek, who has worked with has worked with some of the top fashion brands in the world, also has her own designer handbag range called “Wek 1933.” With a fashion career spanning over two decades, Wek reveals that has proven herself now in the competitive fashion industry.

In a recent interview with the Sunday Times Style magazine last Sunday, Wek said: “I love that I can finally show I wear the bloody clothes, they don’t wear me.”

Alek, who now bases herself out of New York City, has worked with leading global brands such as Chanel, Gucci, Michael Kors, Tommy Hilfiger, and Yes Saint Laurent to name a few.

She went on to say: “That’s the one thing I’ve learned in fashion. You have to be careful what you put out, because people can manipulate it and put out something else.”

She also claims that her own self-confidence is down to her mother who insisted that herself and her other four siblings were beautiful and should be confident with her looks and appearance.

She concluded that: “I couldn’t comprehend coming home and feeling unattractive in my colour or in my features, I know the woman I am.”

Wek is set to host this year’s Fashion Awards 2018 at The Royal Albert Hall in London on Monday 10th December 2018, which will see the cream of fashion talent in attendance with this year’s ceremony celebrating the achievements of Italian fashion designer, Miuccia Prada who is set to be honoured with an “Outstanding Achievement Award” for her contribution to fashion.

Miuccia Prada will join the likes of Ralph Lauren, Karl Lagerfeld and Donatella Versace in the hall of fame who have all been honoured for their contribution to fashion down through the years.
