Jonathan Ross heartbroken as mum Martha dies aged 79. Jonathan Ross has shared the news that his mum, Martha, has died at the age of 79.
In a Twitter statement, he shared a picture of his mother and said: “Today, my family and I will gather to say goodbye to our Mum, Grandma, Great-Grandma. Martha. A wonderful, loving, glamorous, thoughtful, vivacious woman… Always smiling. Always happy. Always putting us first. We were so lucky. We love you Mum x.”
Martha was an extra on Eastenders for years, where she played a stall owner in Bridge Street Market.
Alfie Moon actor Shane Richie also paid tribute to her, saying: “What a lady, what a bloody great lady. I remember how nervous I was on my very 1st day on Albert sq back in 2002, and she just held my hand. She had a heart bigger than any fictional market…thank you Martha.”
Comedian Sanjeev Bhaskar wrote: “Sending love and strength to you and the family Jonathan x.”
Martha lost her role in Eastenders after disclosing some spoilers from a Christmas storyline to her other son, Paul Ross.
A spokesperson for Eastenders said at the time: “Martha was in breach of her contract. Following what was said on Paul Ross’ broadcast, she was asked not to return to filming.”
She also had other roles in Grange Hill as well as starring in theatre productions of Stained Glass, The Last Game and Atlantis.
