Adidas and Stella McCartney reveal vegetarian Stan Smiths. Nothing beats a pair of classic Adidas Stan Smiths. They’re simple, streamlined, and go with everything. Unfortunately, more often than not, they are made of leather, which is environmentally-harmful.
After collaborating for an incredible thirteen years, Adidas and Stella McCartney have relaunched the classic Stan Smith with a sustainable twist.
McCartney, a lifelong vegetarian, has designed her fair share of faux leather, knit and even recycled plastic shoes as part of her Adidas X Stella McCartney line. And it wasn’t until she received a pair of custom Stan Smiths that the legendary fashion designer thought of the idea for her latest trainer.
Speaking to Vogue, she said: “Many years ago, I was given a special pair of vegetarian leather Stan Smiths by my husband and Adidas.”
“It occurred to me that you really couldn’t tell the difference between the real leather and the faux leather pair. I could not help but think [of] how many animals’ lives could be saved if Stan Smith and Adidas would change from real leather to vegetarian leather and use non-animal-based glues.”
She suggested a Stella McCartney X Stan Smith collab and the result will be in stores on September 10th.
“We’ve been collaborating with Adidas for many years, [so] I thought this would be a great way to reach a really wide audience and enable them to understand that you don’t have to have leather shoes or animal-based glues in order to have an incredible, iconic product,” McCartney says.
The ‘Stella Stan Smiths’ looks nearly identical to the original, except for a few details. Instead of a Kelly-green heel, they are colour-blocked with navy and burgundy, with McCartney’s logo. The Adidas stripe down the side has been replaced with tiny punched-out stars, consistent with McCartney’s accessories. Stan Smith’s face remains on the right shoe, while the left has the designer’s portrait.
Each pair costs £235 and will be available for pre-order tomorrow at www.stellamccartney.com.
