The selling of all fur products could be banned. Fashion retailers in Ireland and the UK are being asked to be more transparent when labelling fur products.
Fashion stores that include TK Maxx, Tesco, Boohoo as well as Etsy and Kurt Geiger, have been blasted for misleading consumers with confusing labelling on their products.
According to Vogue magazine, government agencies in the UK have failed to enforce regulations around the sale of real fur with UK government ministers now looking to clamp down on retailers who purposely mislead customers with insufficient labelling on their products.
This is expected to have a knock-on effect in Ireland with the government here also looking to address the matter. The EU also being accused of not doing enough in helping consumers understand the difference between fake and real fur products.
Government agencies in the UK are now looking for labelling that will clearly specify the animal species as well as the country of origin. They also want all fur labelled products to state how the animal was reared and killed. Current EU legislation states that any fur product sold only has to display “materials of the animal origin”. It’s being muted that if Fashion retailers fail to step up their efforts in correctly labelling their products, there is the possibility of a complete ban of all fur sales in the UK.
